How to Play Part 7 - Attacking
If you have read the tutorials, you are almost ready to win battles. This part is about attacking which is something more than just firing.
1) At the beginning of the game, set enemy fleet as 5 Frigates, 3 Destroyers, and Speed: Slow. Press the Play Real Mission button. There are many tactical motives you can discover on your own. The following steps just present regular motives.
2) Find the enemy fleet seen near the horizon and move towards them using a fast paced tempo. Allow the enemy in the yellow range. Spot 5 ships as a convoy and 3 ships around the convoy. The 3 ships around the convoy are the destroyers and they are much more dangerous. Destroyers directly attack you while frigates always try to maintain the convoy. Your main purpose is to sink the frigates but you have to get rid of the destroyers first.
3) Keeping the enemy outside the red and the orange ranges, turn the back of your submarine towards one of the destroyers. Get down to periscope depth. Set your violet range to about 3000. Adjust your rear violet needle, fire two rear torpedoes towards the destroyer and immediately dive to 250m. When the torpedoes hit, the enemy will detect you. Destroyers may come very fast and the whole fleet may fire cannons.
4) Run away from the location they are moving towards or firing at. Hide at 250m if you can. Destroyers will throw depth charges and you need to keep away from them. You might consider diving deeper. If they loose track of you, you might consider an immediate attack or wait until they get back to the fleet formation.
5) Advanced technique: If you can hit the enemy with slightly deflecting torpedoes (which you can master in practice missions), the enemy will spot your location wrongly. This technique will give you a chance to continue attacking and even fish netting the destroyers.
6) You may need to surface and recharge your batteries and repeat the attack until all the destroyers are sunk or at least heavily harmed.
7) After getting rid of destroyers you may get very close to the convoy of frigates at 150m depth. Frigates have only cannons therefore 150m depth is safe even if they are in the red range. When there are no destroyers around, it is quite safe to use your active sonar by pressing the Ping button (or the E key) to detect targets.
8) You might consider harming the leading ships in the convoy first to slow them down. If you run out of torpedoes you can surface without getting noticed and hit the ships with your cannon. Frigates will fire back once they notice you therefore you need to be ready to burst air and dive fast.
These tutorials presented many techniques but probably there is more you can discover on your own.
Here, at itch.io, the game provides missions you can customize and play. You may also play Smooth Submarine at its home page. There, you can play campaigns and submit them to the top score list.
