How to Play Part 5 - When can the enemy see me?
Now we will learn about the enemies' vision and hearing. We will let our submarine get wrecked a few times so be ready.
1) Start a real mission by pressing the Play Real Mission button. In real missions, enemy ships are initially far away. In order to get close to them shortly, we will tempo up the game by pressing the + key (you can also adjust tempo from the settings).
2) Look around near the horizon and you should see white traces (like lines and circles) which indicate where the targets are. Move your submarine toward the enemy and tempo up (+ key) and down (- key) the game so that you can get closer to them quicker.
3) The yellow range seen is where the enemy gets active. So, slow down the game once the enemy is near the yellow range. Inside this range, they might attack you.
4) The red range is where the enemy can start seeing or hearing you. If a ship is in the red range it will attack you. So we have to minimize the red range. Press the Periscope button and wait until your submarine dives to 60m. You will see that the red range becomes smaller.
5) While diving to 60m you will see that the orange range becomes larger which is the range at which the enemy can detect you with their active sonar. The enemy will periodically (every few minutes) send a pulse and listen reflections (this is how the active sonar works). If they catch a reflection in the orange range, they will attack you.
6) In order to make the orange range smaller we first need to retract our periscope by pressing the Periscope button (or the F key). This will also make the red range smaller. Now we are harder to see and hear. When you retract the periscope your sight on the enemy will get less accurate and some white target shapes will appear instead of visible ships.
7) In order to become even harder to detect, we must dive deeper. Press the Deep button (or the V key) and your submarine will dive to 250m. You will see that the orange and the red ranges get much smaller.
8) Adjust your depth by blue buttons with arrows (or T, G and B keys). Do not go down below 250m. Move near the enemy ships and see how they react in the orange range and the red range. You will notice that in the red range they immediately attack you. In the orange range, they will attack if they can receive a reflecting pulse.
9) Try this scenario a few times and try to survive near the enemy.
10) An advanced technique: There is a sonar count down shown as S30'' or S10'' or S0'' etc. below the Ping button down the screen. This count down shows how much time there is expected before the next enemy active sonar pulse reaches your submarine. You may allow ships in the orange range until the count down ends. You can use this technique to sneak around. Also you may consider retracting your periscope before the count down ends and extract it again.
Now you know how your enemy can detect you. There are even better techniques coming up next.
